The All-Time Phillies All Star Team

noledout

To make Major League Baseball’s 86th All Star Game more memorable, I decided to compile a list of The Philadelphia Phillies All Time All Star Team. According to The Phillies web site (http://philadelphia.phillies.mlb.com/phi/history/all_stars.jsp), the players listed were on at least three National League All Star Teams as Phillies and played 10 or more seasons in Phillies pinstripes. They are listed by position, not by preference. No relief pitchers are listed. There are only a handful of them from The Phillies ever selected and only Jonathan Papelbon was chosen more than once.

  • LHP- Steve Carlton: Seven times an All Star representing the Phillies.
  • RHP- Robin Roberts: Six National League All Star teams for the Phillies.
  • Catcher-Darren Daulton: Three All Star Teams as a Phillie which ties him with Bob Boone. I chose Dutch because he played more seasons in Philadelphia and is more attached to Philadelphia and its fans.
  • First Base-Ryan Howard: Again, three NL All Star Teams as a Phillie and a tie with Pete Rose. I chose Howard due to his 10 seasons with The Phillies and he’s much more likeable than Rose. Bet on it! (That’s an article for another day.)
  • Second Base-Chase Utley: Six NL All Star Teams as a Phillie.
  • Third Base-Mike Schmidt: Twelve times a National League All Star including the season in which he retired. Schmidt wore the Phillies pinstripes for all of his 18 seasons in baseball.
  • Shortstop-Larry Bowa: Five times a NL All Star as a Phillie and that happens to be more than Jimmy Rollins.
  • Left Field-Greg Luzinski: Four time NL All Star.
  • Center Field-Ritchie Asburn: Three time NL All Star.
  • Right Field-Johnny Callison: Three time NL All Star as a Phillie and hit a walk off home run in the 1964 midsummer classic.
  • Manager-Charlie Manuel: Charlie is the only Phillie to manage two All Star games. He’s also the only Phillie manager to lose one. Eddie Sawyer won in 1951, Gene Mauch won in 1965, Dallas Green won in 1981, Paul Owens won in 1984 and Jim Fregosi won in 1994.
  • Honorable Mention: Dick Allen, three times an All Star at third base and Jimmy Rollins, three time All Star for The Phillies at shortstop.

There it is, the definitive, ultimate, no argument roster of The All Time Phillies All Stars.

Discuss.
