Welcome to this recap of games involving teams from the American, aka the AAC. This is a summary of what happened when teams you didn’t know were in the league played teams that you wished weren’t in the league. The series will be posted every time a team from the American plays. Standings will be updated at the bottom of every post.
Tulsa 38 Tulane 31 – 2 OT
This double overtime thriller saw an AAC record.
WR Keevan Lucas of @TulsaFootball with a conference record 233 receiving yards tonight.
— American Football (@American_FB) August 29, 2014
Congratulations to Keevan Lucas. Sherman Badie of Tulane ran for 215 yards on 15 carries. That’s a lot. Tulsa quarterback Dane Evans and his fancy hair threw for 438 yards – 4 touchdowns, 3 to Lucas – 2 INTs. Evans led a late touchdown drive that ended in a short touchdown pass. He also completed a two point conversion. Tulane had a shot to win after Badie busted another long run, he had a 90 yard touchdown, but they blew it, missing a 21 yard field goal by about 21 feet to the left.
We live in a world where Tulsa leads the league.
Temple 37 Vanderbilt 7
So Vanderbilt’s first game without James Franklin ….. didn’t go well. Temple only had 341 yards and went 2-17 on 3rd down. That didn’t matter because the defense forced 7, count ’em 7 Commodore turnovers. It was a huge game for the Owl defense. No kidding. 4 fumbles and 3 interceptions made up the turnover-fest. One of the fumble was a sack/fumble that resulted in a fat man touchdown. PJ Walker went 23/34 but only for 207 yards. He threw 2 TDs. Great start for a potential upstart in the AAC.
