Left Field: Christian Yelich, Milwaukee Brewers
2018 fWAR: 7.6
Yelich is another player who saw his power arrive forcefully in 2018. He slugged 39 homers between 2016 and 2017 with the Miami Marlins before hitting 36 this past year alone in Milwaukee. While his ground-ball rate actually settled in at a career-low mark (51.8%), it was still awfully high.
Since his fly-ball rate typically hovers around 20-25% (it was 23.5% in ’18), it’s important to make the most of the balls he does elevate. Yelich did that by posting a 1.917 OPS, 1.078 ISO, and 402 wRC+ off the strength of a 67.0% hard-hit rate for this batted-ball event. The shift to Miller Park also helped, as the young outfielder’s ISO was more than 100 points higher at home (.331) than it was on the road (.217).
