The best MLB player at each position in 2019

MLB: St. Louis Cardinals at Milwaukee Brewers

First Base: Pete Alonso, New York Mets

2019 fWAR: 4.8

Here’s where one of the tiebreakers that had to happen. Alonso and Max Muncy both produced the same fWAR, but given that Alonso broke every rookie home run record there was and had a higher wRC+, I gave the honors to him.

The 24-year-old’s pure power was rather astonishing, too. All 53 of his dingers came via fly balls, and he made the most of that batted-ball event. He posted a 1.006 ISO and a 335 wRC+ when he put balls in the air thanks to a 53.8% hard-hit rate. Alonso also spread it all over the field with a 32.4% pull rate, a 41.0% rate of balls going up the middle, and a 26.6% oppo rate.

Of all the pitches he faced in 2019, the offering he took yard the most was the four-seam fastball. That’s not shocking since it was the most-used pitch against him and he saw it nearly 900 times. Still, his .288/.419/.736 line with 21 homers and a 197 wRC+ jump out at the page.
