Center Field: Mike Trout, Los Angeles Angels
2019 fWAR: 8.6
Well this is a shock, now isn’t it? Despite playing just 134 games and accruing only 600 plate appearances, Trout still found a way to edge out Bregman and lead the league in fWAR — which has become his customary spot on the leaderboards. He enjoyed his second season of 40-plus homers with a career-high 45, and with a 180 wRC+, he registered his fifth straight season with that number being at least 170 (!).
I mean, honestly, it’s hard to find something about Mike Trout that hasn’t been said at least a few times. Before his new deal starts paying him nearly $40 million a year, the outfielder earned just shy of $18 million in 2019, according to Spotrac. FanGraphs has his value pegged at $69.2 million, so even if he did earn close to $40 million, it’d still be a bargain for the Angels.
The consistent dominance from him is just jaw-dropping. When looking at his monthly wRC+ production from this past year, his worst month was May, where he posted a 170 wRC+. His best month was July, where he posted a 202 wRC+.
