With a brilliant yet emotional monologue, the Big Dog Steve Duemig, with only a few days to spare, is signing a contract to stay on WDAE 620 the Sports Animal.
Duemig is unquestionably the dean of Tampa Bay’s sports radio. It does not matter if you like him or loath him, you know him, you’ve heard him, and that is why he is NO.1 in the Bay area Radio. Deumig, known as “The Big Dog”, is the 3Pm to 7 (usually, if not pre-empted by local team broadcast) talk show host on WDAE 620, and is demographically Number 1 in the area, and its not even close.
Some will point out to the variance that 620 enjoys that allows them to increase the power to the station as the reason for him being no.1, But in these days of iHeart radio applications and internet radio and such, that tends to even things out. Deumig is Homer Simpson-esque in his distribution of his material, and is usually emotional, explicit, with a dash of always interesting, and needed in Tampa Bay.
The competition has changed, from JP Peterson, Scott Brantly, etc, which mind you may be more interesting at least to the sound of them in some ways, but no matter who other stations put up against him, The Big Dog has blown them away.
His radio is excellent to listen to, especially the interviews with Bucs players. When he hosted the Joey Galloway show, that was the best hour of radio on the air during the week. Going at college football in their SEC vs Ohio State format was unforgettable. Another great guest was Derrick Brooks who still appears weekly in a series aptly titled Legends.
The Big Dog does this while skipping basketball, instead often taking on the subjects of golf, horse racing, and odds making. Speaking of TAKING ON, He does this with the locals who support other teams even though they have lived here for 10 years, people who quickly judge those in the limelight who get arrested for DUI, to give the court system a chance to work things out before passing judgement, and bloggers who are media wanna-bees who never took the proper channels to do what he does, but water down the media with their opinions.
Well Mr. Duemig, Guilty as charged. ALthough I know you are not against all bloggers, hopefully you’ll check out mind one day and let me know how you like it.
But ladies and gentlemen, bottom line, Steve Dueming, for better or worse, should not be allowed to leave 620 WDAE under any circumstances. Before Jon Gruden was fired, I could not stand to listen to 620 from 3:00PM on. He had it out for Gruden and it was obvious, and I blindly support Bucs coaches because they are what they are, the leader of my favorite team.
But it turns out he was right all along, and since the firing of Gruden, I find myself agreeing with everything he has to say on the Bucs.
If you get the chance, go to 620’s website, and listen to Duemig’s emotional monologue, it is worthy of being the best radio I’ve heard in some time.
Thanks for staying Big Dog.
