This Sunday I am going to the Bills/Cowboys game. I can’t even explain to you how badly I want to get the hell out going to this bullshit game. Now, I’ve taken in my fair share of meaningless December games at RWS. In fact, I’ve gone to one almost every year since 2006. I went to the shitty snowstorm game in 2009 against Indy…I went to the windstorm game against the Pats in 2008..I went to Thad Lewis facing off against Miami in 2013…and you know what? I enjoyed my time at these games. I enjoyed getting cheap tickets, pounding back some beers with old friends, and seeing a football team that while they stunk, it was still football. Well, this year is different because I seriously hate our fucking team. All of them.
Remember when the Bills were really crappy under Jauron/Gailey and we found redeeming qualities about them? Oh, Fitz has a nice beard…oh, Marshawn Lynch likes Dave and Busters…oh, Stevie is wild and fun… Well, there’s nothing here. They suck from the top to the bottom. The constant infighting between the GM/Coach has now gone on for almost 2 years if you count the Marrone saga. Then after that, we can go to players kissing Rex Ryan’s ass like Corey Graham and Eric Wood. Seriously, when did Eric Wood become the voice for the defense? Then after we hit up that blackhole, let’s go to the smear campaign the Bills/certain media members are pulling off about Mario Williams being an asshole for questioning Rex Ryan’s defense, but conduct a parade for Sammy Watkins being a leader after critiquing everyone. The self-serving agendas by some of the folks involved in this mess is sickening.
The man driving this ego-driven runaway train ride is Rex Ryan. Exhibit A: I gotta hear Rex Ryan on the radio tell me how he has such a great proven record. Proven record?? HIS TEAMS HAVENT MADE THE PLAYOFFS IN 5 STRAIGHT YEARS OF COACHING?!!? The Bills had more wins than the Jets from 2011-2014 and now they’ve bypassed us. Yet, he’s still talking shit about how hubris he is?? Oh, but the Jets had so much more talent this year than last year, so cut him some slack, right? WRONG…because Rex inherited a club that was supposed to have way more talent than the Jets and inherited a top 5 defense.
They are completely unlikeable right now because of the egos involved. I’m all for complaining since I do it daily, but as for my football team…its a different complaint every week. Its officiating…its injuries…its systems…its that this or that guy should shut up when talking to the press…or we get players kissing Rex’s ass instead of ass kicking.
The jump off for this basically happened when Rex refused to realize that his defense wasn’t going to work with the personnel this year, so, he’ll likely just get rid of 95/94/53 and bring in his guys. He’ll then bash the high-priced guys he got rid of in training camp and say it was all their fault that his HOF scheme didn’t work. The Bills will then release a bunch of propaganda stating that they are so much smarter now because they drafted all these smart defensive players who don’t have egos or big contracts. That will of course resonate with pockets of the fan base who can’t get over a player making a lot of money and want gumption and grit from their blue collar, high motor guys.
And then we got Doug Whaley, who probably hates it here because basically his last two coaches he’s had to work with were probably hired by Brandon/Nix (Marrone) and The Pegulas (Rex). Last I checked, the GM is the one who is supposed to have a big say in this or actually be the one doing the hiring. He must be thrilled that the defense he helped build with Buddy Nix and later by himself is getting fucked over. Oh, and he hates Greg Roman… Allegedly…and the coaching staff can’t get over EJ being the backup QB when he’s better than Shit Cassel. Who would have saw this discord coming when it was just a fricken year ago that Rex was having issues with his GM in NY and Whaley and Marrone were at each other’s throats. In other words, we should have seen this coming!!! What great chemistry we got here, boys!
This team is lacking leadership, specifically at the top.
I’ll use my 20/20 hindsight here and just say the Bills should have blown this thing up last year. They should have started all over again because basically your core guys have either been here since 2000 (See: Brandon, Russ) or were brought in by Buddy Nix in 2010 (See: Whaley and scouts). They are all proven losers at this this point. We always talk about football trees (See: Belichick/Parcells tree) and when Ralph Wilson is at the top of that tree of knowledge, the branches are rotten to the roots because his seeds were dead to begin with. So, while my heart kind of says we should clean house now, I know that’s basically not going to happen.
If you fire Whaley, then you have to find a GM that wants to work with Rex Ryan and most GMs want to bring in their own guys. Plus, Rex already has a reputation for not getting along with his GM. That’s a red flag for a new GM looking to get hired here. The alternative would be to have Rex have a huge say in who the GM should be, but he certainly hasn’t proven in his NFL career that he should have that power like a Bill Belichick. If you fire Rex, you have to eat his contract and the Pegulas look like fools in the process and it might detour other coaches from coming here cause it shows we are a dysfunctional franchise.
Look, I like Terry Pegula. He’s done a lot of great things with keeping the Bills here and the stuff with Harbor Center, but the way he’s run both his teams since coming into our lives leaves a lot of questions. He doesn’t exactly strike me as someone who is a micro-manager or a guy who will tell his employees to get their shit in order. As it stands right now, he’s making the same mistakes he made when he took over the Sabres and felt that everything was fine with the previous regime and it was all a byproduct of bad ownership from the predecessor. However, we all found out that the Sabres had major issues and it wasn’t all because of the previous owner.
What the Bills need right now is a true leader at the top of the football chain who has zero affection towards any of the people who are at 1 Bills drive. They need an outside voice. They need a football czar. I don’t know who that guy is at this point, but I think there are just too many agendas in that organization right now that are trying to throw people overboard and protect themselves. There needs to be a conduit from the Pegulas to Rex/Whaley. There needs to be someone with a fresh set of eyes that won’t fall for Rex’s fake bullshit bravado or Russ Brandon’s mob front Genco Olive Oil crap of not being involved or Doug Whaley being invisible and not having a say in anything when he was Nix’s protégé.
Pegula is rich enough to hire someone who will tell these ass clowns to hopefully get along and get on the same page. The Bills need an outside evaluator. They blew it last year when they waited too long to hire someone who would tell Pegula what is wrong with a franchise that has gone so long without a playoff appearance. Now is the time to do that.
Give Rex and Whaley another year, but also have new roots planted now that could take over if it fails again next year.
