The Packers beat the Jets on Sunday, and even though the final score was just 9-0, it should still be considered an impressive win. The low score got me thinking, though — how many times did the Brewers outscore the Packers, plating 9 runs or better this season? Well, it turns out the answer is 15 times:
April 17 – MIL 11, WAS 7
April 22 – MIL 20, PIT 0
April 26 – MIL 17, PIT 3
May 4 – MIL 11, LAD 6
May 5 – MIL 11, LAD 3
May 8 – MIL 17, ARI 3
June 14 – MIL 12, LAA 2
July 3 – MIL 12, STL 5
July 16 – MIL 9, ATL 3
July 20 – MIL 9, PIT 11
August 2 – MIL 18, CHC 1
August 8 – MIL 11, HOU 6
August 20 – MIL 10, SDP 6
September 22 – MIL 13, CIN 1
September 30 – MIL 9, NYM 2
Of course, there were also the times Brewers pitching gave up more than 9 runs, which is slightly more painful to remember:
April 12 – MIL 5, CHC 9
April 25 – MIL 2, CHC 12
April 29 – MIL 0, SDP 9
May 11 – MIL 3, ATL 11
May 12 – MIL 2, ATL 9
May 14 – MIL 5, PHI 9
May 15 – MIL 6, PHI 10
May 21 – MIL 3, MIN 15
May 30 – MIL 4, NYM 10
May 31 – MIL 5, FLA 13
June 9 – MIL 4, CHC 9
June 28 – MIL 5, HOU 9
July 7 – MIL 2, SFG 15
July 8 – MIL 3, SFG 9
July 18 – MIL 6, ATL 11
July 20 – MIL 9, PIT 11
July 21 – MIL 3, PIT 15
July 27 – MIL 4, CIN 12
July 28 – MIL 2, CIN 10
August 4 – MIL 3, CHC 15
September 19 – MIL 2, SFG 9
That’s 21 games in which the Brewers gave up more than 9 runs. Good Lord were May and July brutal.
Put the two together, and that’s 35 different games (that July 20 game saw both the Brewers and the Bucs score 9+) that “beat” Sunday’s Packers-Jets score. No wonder Brewers games were among the league’s slowest this year. But remember, even though the Brewers’ offense ranked near the top of the NL in every category, they were a horrible, horrible offense whose inconsistency ruined the Brewers’ season.
