CC Sabathia Returns (and Gives Up Three Homers): Personally, Sabathia’s return to Miller Park had far more emotional impact than Derek Jeter’s final trip to Milwaukee. No player did more than Sabathia to end the Brewers long playoff drought in 2008. He continues to speak fondly of his time with the Brewers, and it’s good to hear his mom also thinks highly of Milwaukee. He got a nice ovation when he came up to bat for the first time. It was great for the fans to be able to express our appreciation for that special run Sabathia had with the Brewers all those years ago.
Then Sabathia surrendered three bigass homeruns to his former team. The man gives until it hurts.

K-Rod Blows a Save: We all knew it was going to happen eventually, there was never going to be a good time for it, and it was going to be a bummer. In some sense, it’s nice to have finally gotten it out of the way, but still…damn. On the bright side, he did get the win, and his 0.45 ERA is nothing to sneeze at. It could have been worse.
Have One on the House (Brewers player who deserves a drink)
Rickie Weeks: This guy has gotten so much grief over the years (not always without justification) that it’s nice to be able to give him some credit. On Saturday, Weeks made only his seventh start of the season. Seizing the opportunity, Weeks went 2-for-4 and drove in the go-ahead RBI in the seventh inning. He earned the start in today’s game against a right-handed pitcher, and Weeks did even better – three hits, two RBIs, and he scored the game-winning run. Don’t look now, but Weeks has raised his batting average to .318. Maybe a few more starts against right-handed pitching are in his future.
Time to Sober Up, Pal (Brewers player who made me want to drink)
Khris Davis: It seems like every time I write off Davis, he ends up getting an important hit…but the fact I have written him off more than a few times indicates he’s had an inconsistent six weeks to start 2014. In the last week, Davis was 1-for-19 and his average has dropped to .212. Even though he’s had some hard hit outs recently, and he has contributed to victories during this young season, Davis still doesn’t seem ready for prime time. I’m willing to bet he has some hot streaks in him, and he may yet surprise us in the remaining three and a half months of the season. But right now, Davis looks like he needs a break.
Back on the Wagon (Thoughts on the week ahead)
Ryan Braun returns from the DL on Tuesday, when the Brewers and Pirates face each other for the first time since Easter Brawl 2014. I’d like to think that will make the series especially dramatic, but it probably won’t be, unless Braun doesn’t hit a homer off of Jason Grilli. It looks like MLB is waiting to uphold Carlos Gomez’ suspension until this series, depriving bloodthirsty fans the opportunity to see Pirates pitchers throw up and in at him. Ah well, hopefully it will just be another uneventful series win against Pittsburgh.
And speaking of series we assume the Brewers will win, the first 2014 trip to century-old Wrigley Field is coming up. It’s really not fair to assume a series victory, since any team can catch a break and beat any other team. The Cubs did just win a series against the goddamn Cardinals not long ago, including a victory against Adam Wainwright. Still, I’d be lying if I said I don’t look forward to Cubs games on the Brewers’ schedule.
