Sigh.
I admit, I flipped over to the Cardinal game to see them blow it in the 8th and nearly come back in the 9th. As expected, the Birds took it to the precipice of being a big night and slammed the door in opportunity’s face.
We said it before on Twitter, but Corey Patterson is a lot like having herpes… not really noticeable, but tends to flare up a the most inopportune times. You know, like a 9th inning 2 out rally… cough…
And while I get why people are still semi-involved in this season (11 over .500 doesn’t a bad team make, you’ve invested in 140 something games, why quit now, etc al), it still doesn’t change the fact that this is a team of roaches. As soon as light hits them, they scatter to somewhere dark and cold where no one can see ’em.
To be honest, it’s been like that for a while now. It’s not like this team has a lack of talent. Nor are they poorly coached. But there’s something that happens to the Cardinals the past 4-5 years where every time we think that this sucker is about to get rolling, where a big winning streak is on the way… they always tend to go to a Pittsburgh or a Houston and then tank.
What is that? Really, what IS that?
It’d be easy if we could blame butt-ass pitching or a lack of offense or some other straw man, but we can’t. Because it’s something new all the time and it’s never bad enough to really be the touchstone for our ire.
So here we sit with 15 games to go, another opportunity missed and a game where we can’t say – HA – this, whatever this is, happened again, how are they going to fix THAT?
We just kind of sit there and take it. And wonder. Just like the roaches… where exactly do they go? And do we want to find out?
