The Cardinals Have Not Been Good In Home Openers @ Busch Stadium III

Last week we talked about the Cardinals struggles on Opening Day of the season. With their loss to the Pirates 8 days ago, the Cardinals are now 2-8 in the last 10 first games.

Not to be Deb Downer about home openers as well… but since Busch Stadium opened in 2006, the Cardinals are 3-7 in first games in St. Louis.

Here’s the full rundown:

  • 2006: W (Brewers 6-4)
  • 2007: L (Mets 6-1)
  • 2008: L (Rockies 2-1)
  • 2009: L (Pirates 6-4)
  • 2010: W (Astros 5-0)
  • 2011: L (Padres 5-3)
  • 2012: L (Cubs 9-5)
  • 2013: L (Reds 13-4)
  • 2014: W (Reds 5-3)
  • 2015: L (Brewers 5-4)
  • 2016: ???

Truth be told, the Cardinals are kind of like a bad host at a killer dinner party.

They didn’t add much value outside of providing the house. Made a few off-putting comments here and there that were kind of a buzzkill. But all you remember is the great time you had with everyone else.

I’ve had the fortune to go to a few of the games above. And – at least to me – it was kind of surprising to see how often they lost. I would have figured their record was like 7-3 or at the worst 6-4.

But nah. Looks like they’re getting caught up in the pomp & circumstance as much as the fans.

At the end of the day, home openers haven’t seemed to matter one way or the other in terms of seasonal success. A majority of those squads went on to make the playoffs. And hopefully the 2016 version does as well.

Here’s to having a big time today… while ALSO getting a win.

BTW, here’s a Busch Stadium 10th anniversary video that the Cardinals sent out on Sunday:
