The Charlie Morton Chronicles Go Electric

I don’t think I can say much more about Charlie Morton’s 2010 season than I already have (if you’re behind; Part 1, Part 2, Part 3 and the sinker). What it boils down to is this: Morton’s a very talented pitcher. The whole “electric stuff” thing has become kind of a joke at this point, but it’s absolutely true. He’s as talented as any pitcher in the Pirates’ rotation right now and I’m not saying that to damn him with faint praise. If Ray Searage can help him pull himself together on the mound, I think he could have a very good year, despite the ugliness of the first half of last year. He decent run in September last year and a great spring, but this is the big test. I still think he can do it.

In the wider view, a series win against the Cubs is nice, but the Pirates owned the Cubs last year. The Cardinals are always a bit more problematic, though the Bucs are catching them at a good time with Matt Holliday out after his emergency appendectomy last week. There would be no better way to start 2011 than with series wins in Chicago and St. Louis. The Bucs are halfway there.

Chaz and Kyle Lohse pitch tonight. First pitch is 8:15 PM ET. What’s college basketball?
