In a move that is one of those total PC moves that make you roll your eyes, the presidents for Cincinnati and Xavier have changed the name of the Crosstown Shootout. It’s now the Crosstown Classic. In a joint statement, the presidents said this:
“We wanted to find ways to remind us all, including student-athletes and fans, that our athletic competition is about our two universities coming together to celebrate our hometown of Cincinnati and the mutual respect we have for each other. We want to celebrate the values we share in common and use this event to positively impact the city we both call home beyond just game night,” Williams and Graham said.
That’s from Go Bearcats. The good news is that a portion of the proceeds go to the National Underground Railroad Freedom Center. That’s a smart, classy decision.
Changing the name of the event is rather dumb in the eyes of this writer. They get in one little fight and the presidents get scared. They said “You’re moving to a neutral site by the riv-air.” I can’t think of any other lines for that, but feel free to add them in the comments. I said this on twitter, but I’m not going to call this game the Crosstown Classic. You aren’t going to call it the Crosstown Classic. No one but the schools will call it the Crosstown Classic. It’s the Shootout. It’s always going to be the Shootout. In 15 years when a new generation rises, they can call it the Classic. I’ll sit there and be one of those stubborn people in their 40s who refers to things in their 20s all the time. Actually now that I think about it, I’ll probably call it the Crosstown Classic (Shootout) whenever I refer to the game in a pregame post. I’m already a sellout. Just like the UC and Xavier presidents.
