The Daily Sniper: From the Canadian Law Firm of Niedermayer and Niedermayer

The Daily Sniper: News and notes from last night’s action…

Western Conference Finals, Game 2: Anaheim 4, Detroit 3 (OT)
You can thank the man himself for the beautiful title that you see above. If you’re of the Anahiem rooting interest, you can also thank the Niedermayer brothers, as they were the story of the night on Sunday. They combined for two goals, three points and a plus three rating on the night, including the game winning goal. With under six minutes to go in the first overtime, Rob found Scott in the bottom of the left face off circle, and Scott fired a wrist shot past Dominik Hasek to give Game 2 of the Western Conference finals to the Ducks by a 4-3 margin. The series is now even at one game a piece.

Special thanks to the zebras tonight, as the referees managed to stay out of the spotlight by correctly calling all the goals (including the one to your right). Twice they went upstairs to video replay and twice they made the right call. Apparently they’re not calling Toronto to review every goal, either and are instead just going upstairs to the video review judge. I guess Bettman wants to save some dough on long distance phone calls.

Most interesting stat of the night; Francois Beauchemin led all skaters in ice time with 37:49 and was plus three. Think about it, two Niedermayers, Pronger, Lidstrom and Chelios on the ice, there’s at least three Hall of Famers there, and the late blooming defender in his second full season sees more ice than any of them. Shows you just how much he means to the team.

All in all, another entertaining game from the Motor City. Game three is Tuesday at 9 eastern from the Pond in Anaheim.
