Jim Gray wasn’t available, so I’ll have to make this announcement myself.
Beginning August 3rd, I am leaving my day job to work on The Duck Stops Here and other writing projects full-time. The Duck Stops Here will be a 24-hour source of opinions, features, commentary and analysis on Duck football, and throughout the season we’ll be producing 3-4 stories a day.
Just like the Ducks, in December we’ll look up and see where we’re at.
My intention is to take a chunk of my retirement while I’m young enough and healthy enough to enjoy it. It’s a journey of exploration, sailing out into the open ocean of how good a writer I can become and what I can learn from the experience.
Recently my youngest sister completed an arduous course of chemotherapy for an aggressive form of breast cancer. Today she had an appointment, and the doctor said, “Your exam is normal and there is no sign of cancer. Come back and see me in six months.”
Watching the courage she displayed in walking through cancer’s fire made me reflect deeply on what I wanted in the second half of my life. I’ve decided to blitz more and open up the passing game.
It’s been said that everybody dies, but not everybody lives. I’ve been broke before, and unemployed before, and neither one scares me.
After serving a two-week notice we’ll be covering Duck football from a fan perspective on a daily basis with frequent posts and updates. It promises to be the most exciting season in Oregon history. I’m eager to share the experience with readers I’ve grown to consider friends.
