Last night, the first BCS standings came out in college football. This goes a long way to determining who will be playing in the National Championship in January. The top two teams in the BCS standings are the teams that will compete in the National Championship.
With that being said let’s take a look at the top five spots in the standings:
1. Alabama Crimson Tide (6-0, 3-0 SEC): This team has been dominate through the first six games of the season but what do you expect from a Nick Saban team, nothing but the best. This past Saturday, the Crimson Tide handled Missouri 42-10 as it was no contest after the first quarter. One thing that makes Alabama so good is their defense. Their defense has only allowed 7.5 points per game that is good enough for first in the nation. Alabama’s next game is on Saturday, October 20th, as they will go on the road and take on the Tennessee Volunteers.
2. Florida Gators (6-0, 5-0 SEC): I did not expect this Gators team to be this good after the season they had last year but they are good! This past Saturday, they defeated Vanderbilt 31-17 and next Saturday have a big test as the face #7 South Carolina in Gainesville. Just like Alabama, the Gators are led by their defense as they have only allowed 12.3 points per game, which is good for sixth in the nation. But what this team is known for is their rushing attack as they average 233.3 rushing yards per game, which is good enough for 14th in the nation. The Gators is a team to watch and if they can handle their business, they could possibly meet Alabama in the SEC Championship game which will most likely determine who plays in the National Championship.
3. Oregon Ducks (6-0, 3-0 Pac-12): The team with the quick strike offense and different combination of the jerseys lands at this spot. The Ducks are a very dangerous team and they have been every year since Chip Kelly has been head coach. As I mentioned earlier their offense is dangerous, the Ducks average 52.3 points per game and average 302.3 rushing yards. Those are some eye popping stats! The Ducks next game will be this Thursday at Arizona State University.
4. Kansas State Wildcats (6-0, 3-0 Big 12): Bill Synder’s Wildcats are actually in contention for a National Championship! They deserve to be after running the table so far and beating #6 Oklahoma in Norman back in September. The Wildcats are led by their Heisman candidate quarterback Collin Klein who has 1,074 passing yards, 7 passing touchdowns, 510 rushing yards, and 10 rushing touchdowns. He is definitely their number one playmaker. Klein single handle beat Iowa State by running for 105 yards and three touchdowns as KSU survived 27-21 versus Iowa State. The Wildcats next game will be on October 20th at #13 West Virginia. That should be a good game between quarterbacks Geno Smith (WVU) and Klein.
5. Notre Dame Fighting Irish (6-0): The Irish have to be the surprise of college football! I know I am surprised by them too. Their schedule isn’t easy as they have beat Michigan State, Michigan, Miami (FL), and Stanford all in consecutive weeks. The Irish’s defense has been phenomenal can you say 2nd in nation in points against with 8.7. They are only behind Alabama so in my eyes they are good! This past Saturday, they beat Stanford in overtime 20-13. On October 20th, the Irish will play the BYU Cougars as they are on the road to competing for a National Championship.
Rounding out the top 10 of the BCS standings are:
6. LSU
7. South Carolina
8. Oregon State
9. Oklahoma
10. USC
This is only the first week of the BCS standings so there will be changes coming in the next coming weeks as anything can happen!
