If you were hoping on finding out what the deal is with Joe Beimel’s injured elbow today, don’t hold your breath. According to Colin Dunlap, he had trouble sitting still during his MRI yesterday afternoon and the doctors couldn’t get a good picture of his injured arm. Jen Langosch says that he didn’t want to have a second MRI done and that his arm feels OK today. Apparently the team doctors aren’t forcing him to go through it again, so he’s going to try and throw again tomorrow.
It’s tempting to say that maybe this is a good sign that he’s alright, but the truth is that if he needs Tommy John surgery, his season (and time with the Pirates, most likely) is over whether he has the surgery this friday or next Friday or in a month. If he wants to try and throw again tomorrow without having a second MRI, why should the Pirates stop him? Hopefully we’ll have a better idea of the extent of the problem by the end of the week.
UPDATE: The official team response today is “no acute damage” to the elbow. Though I don’t even know if they could detect “acute damage” from a blurry, half-finished MRI. I guess Beimel’s throwing session tomorrow should clear things up.
