In honor of Matt Schaub — my fourth favorite Texans quarterback behind Case Keenum, John David Booty, and Rex Grossman –, here are eight (his jersey number and also his QBR rating in games where more than ten people watched) thoughts about Bellator 91 and events that transpired on Thursday.
1. So, Saad Awad wants a little more than a cup of tea. His KO victory over Will Brooks was unexpected and impressive. If Awad is able to score a knockout against David Rickels and his testosterone-fueled beard in the lightweight finals then we may be looking at one of the most powerful punchers at 155 pounds.
2. Speaking of David Rickels, he is such an great asset to any fight promotion. He can cut a killer promo, is an intriguing character, and usually puts on compelling contests. If Jon Fitch had those three qualities, he would probably be in discussions with Dana White about his future with the UFC as an international representative following his induction into the company’s hall of fame.
3. Aside from being fast-paced and compelling, the Bellator prelims featured two fighters that really piqued my interest. The first of which was Russell Wilson. For some reason, I have an infatution with fighters who share their names with celebrities and athletes. My favorite fighter who has a celebrity name would have to be George Bush. Oh yeah, Wilson lost in the third round after being hit with knees repeatedly.
4. The other fighter was undefeated Holly Holm who is considered the top female boxer. Needless to say, she’s got a lot of marketability and could be a major superstar in MMA. Holm took care of Katie Merrill with a body shot. She’s got a lot to improve on, but the future is bright for the boxer-turned-MMA fighter.
5. The Bellator app is fantastic. It tracks strikes, takedowns, and submission attempts in real time as the fight takes place. You can also vote on who won which round and look at well designed fighter profiles. I must say the app is well worth the 0.00 you have to pay for it.
6. Ready for an understatement? The Light Heavyweight title fight left more to be desired. It wasn’t an atrocity, but it was lackluster. The ratings must have fallen off of a cliff after the first round. It’s a shame as up to that point, it was another excellent card.
7. Bjorn Rebney’s dream Light Heavyweight scenario would have to be Emanuel Newton winning the tournament and the title, King Mo winning the following tournament, and Mo winning the strap in a re-match. I need to be a pro wrestling booker.
8. When the news broke that Dennis Rodman had become “friends for life” with Kim Jong Un, I was ready to write Rodman off as a Benedict Arnold, but then I came to the realization that he may have prevented a World War III with his newfound friendship. This world is a crazy place.
