Maybe you had to work. Perhaps you had a date. Could have taken your kids to Taylor Swift. But if you missed the Cardinals/Pirates game and saw the 3-0 final, you might think it was a pretty routine game.
It was not.
In fact, it was the most grinding win of 2015. Maybe ever. A full on assault on your nerves. The kind of game that doesn’t make you have a drink, it makes you finish the bottle.

To wit:
The Pirates left 16 runners on base. SIXTEEN. That’s an average of 1.7 stranded runners per inning! They were 0-12 with runners in scoring position. Had 43 plate appearances (including 10 walks including, 3 in one inning). All without scoring a single run!
Don't mind me, I'll be in the fetal position for the next hour after that game.

I’m not good at math, but you’d have to figure the odds of putting that many runners on base without scoring a single run are long. Real long. In fact, there have only been 3 other teams in the past 30 years that have drawn 10 or more walks without scoring a single run.
Pirate fans are shellshocked.

With the win, the Cardinals magic number is down to 2. Another win tomorrow and the Cardinals will officially be the NL Central champions.
I know it doesn’t feel like a party (especially with the very scary injury to Piscotty), but the win tonight means that the Cardinals have a 4 game lead with 5 to play. The division is pretty much wrapped regardless of what happens the next two days.
That was a HUGE win.

99 wins.
Somehow.
The Cardinals keep pushing forward against all odds.
