It’s a mindset of always being ready, even when the chance of that happening is not to be expected every night.
The Sacramento Kings finally have depth, especially at the point guard position. Darren Collison and Rajon Rondo should be the two holding down the majority of the minutes at the point guard position.
However, there is one young man that is ready to have his name called and his name is Seth Curry not “Steph Curry’s brother.”
On and off an NBA roster has been something Curry has lived since he announced himself eligible for the NBA draft back in 2013, where he went undrafted.
Now he is preparing for his second home game tonight against his team’s biggest rival – the Los Angeles Lakers.
But he seems ready to become that “next man up” for Sacramento if his number is called. Last year’s D-League MVP realizes the hurdles he has to climb to get minutes on this deep roster.
“You just stay ready, you never know what’s going to happen,” Curry said. “Right now he (coach Karl) got a rotation that he has got going in the preseason and I wasn’t really in that. But I am just trying to keep playing well in practice and just stay ready. I know my opportunities going to come sooner or later.”
The one thing we know this guy can do is shoot. Whether you know him by his last name, the D-League, or his collegiate days in Duke, Curry has always proved that he (like the rest of his family) knows how to put the ball in the rim.
It all starts with practice and proving your worth to the coaching staff. Knowing exactly what you bring to the team helps, and if that ability is knocking down shots in a variety of ways, then players such as Curry can turn heads.
“I feel like I do stuff that we don’t really have with the this team right now,” Curry said. “I’m a combo guard that can handle the ball, make plays, and stretch the floor with my shooting.”
There is no doubt that Curry is a player who doesn’t lack confidence. The best part is that Curry does it in such a way that you get the sense that he knows he still has much to learn, which is something you want from your end-of-the-roster prospect.
Grasping knowledge from the veterans, watching game film, or just working hard in practice will give you an opportunity to learn something new in order to elevate your game to the next level and the 25-year-old fully understands that.
“It’s always valuable being around the game,” Curry said. “I try to be a student of the game when I am watching the games on TV, in practice, or on the bench.”
An injury to either Collison or Rondo and even a blowout game will allow Curry to get some valuable minuets on the floor this season. With the injury history behind the two players that are ahead of him in the depth chart, having a “next man up” mentality will give him the opportunity to play and give his organization a sense of trust to play as a floor general.
Curry is part of this teams depth and has the tools and versatility to be a contributor to this Sacramento Kings roster when given the opportunity.
