On Thursday afternoon, the unthinkable happened at Citizens Bank Park. The Philadelphia Phillies loss to the Los Angeles Dodgers 8-3 and get swept in this four game series. The Phillies gave starting pitcher Cole Hamels an early lead by the third inning leading 3-0. Then as the game progressed and we got into the sixth inning and the fortunes changed for the Phillies. Cole Hamels could not get out of the inning as the Dodgers got three runs to take the lead 4-3. You also cannot forget in this inning, Ty Wigginton had a tough time on defense at third base, which eventually cost Hamels and the Phillies.
The Los Angeles Dodgers bullpen in the late innings shut down the Phillies offense again just as they did in the first three games in the series. The Phillies bullpen on the other hand was okay but relief pitcher Chad Qualls had a horrible top of the ninth inning as he gave up four runs on five hits and only got one out in the inning. Finally, in the bottom of the ninth to put the stamp on this sweep, Hunter Pence grounded into a double play.
The Phillies finished this home stand 1-6 and now have a record of (28-31). The Phillies just like the rest of the Major League starts interleague play and for the Phils they will be on the road for nine games. Their journey starts this evening at Camden Yards, as they will take on those surprising Baltimore Orioles. The Baltimore Orioles record this season is (32-25). On the mound for the Phillies it will be Joe Blanton (4-6, 5.27 ERA), who will be looking to get back on the winning track as his last two outings have not been good. Lastly, on the mound for the Orioles it will be Jake Arrieta (2-7, 5.53 ERA). Let’s hope the Phillies can break their six game losing streak against a tough Baltimore Orioles team. First pitch is at 7:05 pm.
