This afternoon was not your regular Phillies game as the Phils were looking to sweep the Cardinals. The Phillies’ struggles started in the first inning as Cardinals catcher, Yadier Molina, hit a grand slam off of Phillies ace, Roy Halladay, which sent the Phils down early 4-0.
The Phillies did not score till the third inning; the same inning that Roy Halladay left the game due to right shoulder soreness. The Phillies only scored one run in the inning and fell behind 4-1. The bullpen did alright as Joe Savery pitched two innings, although gave up two earned runs, but Chad Qualls is still trying to figure out his mechanics and it showed. Qualls gave up a three run home run to Carlos Beltran in the fifth inning and a solo home run to Matt Adams in the sixth inning. The Phillies fell to the Cardinals this afternoon 8-3.
It is all good that the Phillies won this series by taking three out of the four games but the biggest concern is the shoulder of Roy Halladay. This pitching staff needs a healthy and capable Halladay as Vance Worley is still out and Cliff Lee is still looking for his first win on the season. The Phillies will now open up a three game series versus the New York Mets beginning on Memorial Day. On the mound will be Cole Hamels (7-1) for the Phillies and Jonathon Niese (3-2) for the Mets. Game time for tomorrow afternoon is 1:10 pm.
