Jacksonville Jaguars quarterback Blake Bortles has made huge strides in his game from year one to year two, and the results have shown up on the stat sheet.
In 14 games last season as a rookie, Bortles tossed 11 touchdowns to 17 interceptions with a 69.5 QB rating. Through nine games in year two, Bortles has already tossed 19 touchdowns (tied for 5th) to 11 interceptions, and holds an 81.0 QB rating.
He’s tossed at least two touchdown passes in seven of nine starts, and against Tampa Bay, fired for scores in a 38-31 loss.
Bortles isn’t perfect at all, and he has struggled with accuracy. Twice this season he’s completed under 50% of his passes, but the progress of Bortles is there. He’s the face of a very young football team loaded with talent on offense, and he has a pair of dynamic wide receivers who offer one of the best 1-2 punches in football (Allen Hurns and Allen Robinson). Add on former 2nd round pick Marqise Lee and tight end Julius Thomas, and the Jags offense could be easily be putting up 28 a game (like their expansion partner Carolina Panthers are- and with less offensive talent).
Thanks to a weak AFC South, the Jags currently sit in 3rd place at 3-6, but just one game behind the Colts and Texans. They have the offensive to be competitive, and they have a gun slinging QB in Blake Bortles, who is progressing perfectly in his second season in the league.
