The Redskins offensive line, we bad not in a good way, says PFF

As the sun shines on a happy DMV after a nice win over the Philadelphia Eagles, outsiders are pointing fingers at the Redskins offensive line.

Pro Football Focus rates the Redskins offensive line No. 31 in the NFL. PFF ranked Washington the 12th best in 2014. Here is a snippet of their story:

While the team would have been hoping for more of an instant impact from Brandon Scherff, the real issue has been [C Kory Lichtensteiger]. Simply put, your center should not have given up 13 quarterback disruptions after four games, when he gave up just 16 total in 2014.

It is based on four games, a small sample size indeed. They have yet to jell under the concepts of new position coach Bill Callahan.

Hog Heaven figures that rookie Brandon Scherff must see every division rival once to round into NFL form. He won’t see the Cowboys until December, after his second game against the Giants.

It’s a journey, so the line figures to improve over the season, then perform better in 2016.

You knew that, right?

PFF rates our line stronger at run blocking than pass blocking. Coincidence?

Callahan calls the running plays. It is logical that rushers and blockers would be more in synch early in the season.

Pass blocking played a role in Robert Griffin III’s demotion.  You can’t bench the entire line. Kirk Cousins, even Colt McCoy, are better able to cope.

I am not convinced that the Redskins have given up on Griffin. Coach Jay Gruden does not spend time developing players during the season. That’s off-season work.

Cousins got that treatment last year. Now he is the starter. RG is on ice like Cousins last year. The Redskins won’t know what to do with Griffin until they see more of Cousins as the undisputed starter.

That brings us right back to our line.

The Lions, Ravens, Seahawks and Buccaneers round out the bottom five lines, says PFF.

The best offensive line right now is the Redskins’ next opponent, The Atlanta Falcons.
