The Rhino and Compass mock draft

You maybe listened to us earlier and we ran through the first 16 picks of our draft on the Snipper and Crowbar show earlier, but here is the mock draft that me and my friend Mike created last night. We alternated picks (his were the odds, mine the evens) and we each had the option of having one team trade up into our pick. So, here you go, the NFL Mock draft, and a few comments for every pick.

Indianapolis:  Andrew Luck QB Stanford.  Just a formality at this point.

Washington: Robert Griffin III QB Baylor. Washington traded up for a reason. (Eric and I discussed Ryan Leaf. This is a pertinent link)

Minnesota: Matt Kalil OT USC.  No one will trade with MN. (proven wrong already)

Cleveland : Trent Richardson RB Alabama. I think Cleveland will look to trade down, knowing there are many helpful players here, and paying through the nose for a running back is not a good investment. They will take Richardson anyways.

Tampa Bay:  Morris Claiborne CB LSU.  Best defender available.  No need for WR with V-Jax signing.

St. Louis: Justin Blackmon WR Oklahoma State: Another no doubter off the board.

Jacksonville: Michael Floyd WR Notre Dame:  Jacksonville has a decent defense, need to sell tickets and generate excitement.  No one loves Tannehill that much to jump ahead of MIA.

Miami: Ryan Tannehill QB Texas A&M: I don’t have anything good to say about Ryan Tannehill, but it’s pretty obvious he is going to be a Dolphin.

Carolina: Stephon Gilmore CB South Carolina:  Needs help on D; some could consider him best available at this point.

Buffalo Courtney Upshaw OLB Alabama: With the top tow CBs off the board, the Bills will look to trade down. Unable to do so, they will go to their next greatest need, and OLB to pair with Mario Williams. (They appear to be down on Reilly Reiff)

Kansas City: David DeCastro G Stanford:  After taking a long look at a variety of pass rushers they take a safe pick and upgrade the O-line.

Seattle Melvin Ingram, DE, South Carolina: The Seahawks are left with a bounty of prospects that suit them well, and opt to fill their biggest need, on the D-Line.

Arizona: Riley Reiff OT Iowa: Need tons of help, this is a start.

San Diego (From Dallas): Dontari Poe DT Memphis. The Chargers move up, as the Cowboys have no immediate needs to fill with players on the board. The Chargers trade pick 18, and their third round pick for the Cowboys 14th overall selection.

Philadelphia:  Michael Brockers DT LSU:  Lots of defense left on the board PHI takes best available that fills need.

New York Jets: Luke Kuechly ILB Boston College: With Bart Scott out of town, the Jets take a guy that has fallen a bit in this draft who fills a pressing need

Cincinnati: Mark Barron S Alabama:  Great value here for one of top players on one of the best defenses.

Dallas (from San Diego)Dre Kirkpatrick CB Alabama: The Cowboys need to update their secondary, and figured Barron would be available here, but are happy to find Kirkpatrick instead.

Chicago: Fletcher Cox DT Mississippi State.  Help for the DL is a must, and the OL can wait till later rounds.  Should be a great partner on the right side with Peppers.

Tennessee: Chandler Jones, DE Syracuse The Titans haven’t had a good rush end since maybe Kearse.

Cincinnati: Quinton Coples DE North Carolina.  A few pass rushers still around; Bengals take their pick.

Cleveland: Coby Fleener TE Stanford. Fleener is getting a lot of buzz, and gives Colt McCoy a real live weapon. Some people are saying he could be better than Gronkowski.

Detroit: Jonathan Martin OT Stanford.  Continuing to keep Stafford healthy has proved like it could be successful.

Pittsburgh: Cordy Glenn OG Georgia: The O-Line is the greatest weakness for the Steelers, and Glenn might just be the best player available.

Denver:  Devon Still DT Penn State:  With no value OL here the Broncos help the DL with a proven producer.

Houston: Stephen Hill, WR, Georgia Tech: The Texans are going to be very happy to add depth at WR in the draft, and they are fortunate they can choose between Hill and Kendall Wright, opting for the larger Hill

New England: Kendall Reyes DT/DE Connecticut.  Pats love versatile lineman and need help in the front 7.

Green Bay: Harrison Smith, SS, Notre Dame. Safety is a need for the aging Packers secondary.

Baltimore: Dont’a Hightower ILB Alabama.  Could help right away and certainly down the road for the aging unit.

San Francisco Lavonte David, OLB Nebraska. The 49ers go “best available” and take a linebacker who will help with depth on a very good line backer corps.

Cleveland (from New England): Brandon Weeden QB Oklahoma State.  Cleveland gets competition for McCoy, sends 37th and their 4th rounder for the 31st.

New York Giants: Janoris Jenkins CB Northern Alabama: Jenkins has had some issues (he was kicked out of Florida) but a strong locker room environment in New York will help keep him in line, and he could prove to be a fantastic value late in the first round
