Former Redskins defensive backs run the two best teams in the NFC, Martin Mayhew (1989-1992) is Detroit’s GM and Mark Murphy (1977-1984) is Green Bay’s president. Murphy is not to be confused with the Packers DB of the same name who played from 1980 to 1991.
The Packers are the defending Super Bowl Champions. Mayhew gets credit for the Lions’ turnaround for making better NFL Draft picks than his predecessor, Matt Millen. The Lions and Packers are the NFL’s only unbeaten teams at 4-0. They meet Thanksgiving Day, November 24, at Ford Field in Detroit and will close out the season January 1, 2012 at lambeau Field in Green Bay.
Both Murphy and Mayhew used their time in Washington to matriculate (love that word) through Georgetown Law and from there through the Players Association or the league office to get to team management. Murphy was also athletic director at Northwestern.
Here is another Georgetown oddity for you. Lions head coach Jim Schwartz played linebacker for the Hoyas before graduating as an Econ major. He was coaching at Catholic University in Washington, DC, when Bill Belichick brought him on board his Cleveland Browns coaching staff.
Cardinals owner Bill Bidwell, former 49ers and Browns executive Carmen Policy and former NFL Commissioner Paul Tagliabue are Georgetown alumni.
Georgetown Hoyas: football Factory.
