Welcome to the silly season officially as the unofficial end of the college calendar went down last night – just don't tell that to UW's softball team, who will be looking for redemption this weekend after a 1-2 weekend at the hands of the hated Gophers, or to the track & field teams, or rowing for that matter either.
Sure, they may be minor sports to some, but they provide some great entertainment and as of late they've all been pretty freaking good. So get your rear ends out and support these teams as spring attempts to find it's way to Wisconsin at some point in time.
Diatribe over it's time to get on to the links and some of what's going on in Badger nation!!
Speaking of softball, weather related issues are killing the mojo as Wisconsin announced today that their home opening series for the 2013 season is being canceled – it was scheduled for this weekend. Instead the Badgers are hoping for their April 16th game against Green Bay to be the opener. If it is, it will be the latest in school history.
The biggest spotlight of spring is always on the QB position, or so it seems at Wisconsin as they haven't had a steady force at the position since Scott Tolzien. Could we be in for a one year starter again this year? Well, according to Tom Mulhern of the Wisconsin State Journal, one Curt Phillips is leading the QB derby this spring.
If he holds on to it through fall camp and the arrival of Tanner McEvoy on campus then the Badgers could be looking at four different starters in four years come this time next year. Man, would it be nice to have some long-term stability at the QB spot or what?
It's super early, but that never stops the awesome Phil Steele from predicting things & after last year predicting 24 of the 25 members of the AP preseason Top 25 he's at it again this year…. and Wisconsin comes in at No. 24 as Steele notes the fact that Wisconsin does return 15 starters from a three time Rose Bowl participant.
Outgoing star running back Montee Ball thinks that Melvin Gordon has the potential to be even better than him – and after the explosive play making ability we saw on full display against Nebraska it's hard to argue that he doesn't have that kind of potential.
Don't forget – barring crappy weather (and the way this week has gone that's unlikely to be the case) Wisconsin football will once again open up scrimmage to the public inside Camp Randall on Friday afternoon/evening. We'll be there, so don't hesitate to come find us and say hi!
