The Sconnie Scoop: OSU Prez spices up Bielema vs. Wisconsin

It's Friday in the summer and it's nice one here in these parts. So before you head up north or head to the local establishment to enjoy the beautiful weather it only seems right we drop a few fun and lighthearted nuggets your way.

Before doing that though, there is a matter of some actual news within the Badgers program as the Badgers basketball program has hired a new strength and conditioning coach, one Erik Helland. He comes to the UW after being on the strength and conditioning staff of the Chicago Bulls since 1988, serving as the head of the department since 2001.

“We are extremely excited that Erik will be working on a day-to-day basis with the Wisconsin basketball program,” head coach Bo Ryan said in a statement released by the school. “He is renowned in the field of strength and conditioning and specifically basketball training. Erik has the experience and background to maximize athletes and understands the physicality and quickness needed for our game. He has worked with some of the best basketball players in the history of the game and we believe his addition is beyond a home run for us.”

Now, with that out of the way, let's dive into some of the lesser nuggets of information around Badgerland, shall we?

First up we've got to talk about our ex-football coach (the use of his actual name has been banned from use on our site, unless in a direct quote from another source), only this time it's actually funny stuff.

In a clear indication that rivalries never die there was this awesome response to a Tim Brewster (ex-Gophs football coach) tweet yesterday:

Which was then followed up by this brilliant explanation:

Just when we thought the Wisconsin vs. Safety School rivalry was getting stale… BOOM, leave up to old HC's to rekindle the flames, huh?

Then the crux of the funny stuff… and this wasn't of the ex-HC's doing…. the accusation that AD Barry Alvarez thought Bret Bielema was a thug. The source of this information? Ohio State president Gordon Gee. No, seriously, here's the direct quote for you:

“Someone was saying to me, well, you know, Bret Bielema leaving … that was a blessing for Wisconsin and they knew it. Because he was under tremendous pressure. They didn’t like him. Barry Alvarez thought he was a thug. And he left just ahead of the sheriff."

So… was the ex-HC's exit to Arkansas more about him getting out while the getting was good? Hard to imagine after winning three straight Big Ten titles, however another loss in the Rose Bowl could've been a nail in the coffin should it have gone down with him at the helm. My guess… Barry ain't talking about this so we'll never know.

Reading the guy's full remarks its truly astounding how this guy still has a job as the head of an academic institution. NOT A SMART MAN!!
