The strategy of the Redskins GM Scot McCloughan can perhaps be simplified by 4C’s: Cardinals, Colts, Cousins and Cornerbacks.
Cardinals – the Redskins are trying to copy the success of the Cardinals not just on defense by picking Su’a Cravens in the 2nd round a la Deone Buchanon, but also their passing game. The Cardinals are stacked at Wide Receiver with top talent. Not only that, they have a very productive screen pass running back.
Will Matt Jones be a great lead running back? Not sure. But he could easily become the best screen pass running back in the entire league given his beastly size and speed. Expect the Redskins to massively increase how many catches Jones will get this year.
Cornerbacks – Scot holds the rules have changed to make the NFL a passing game. This means besides stacking great Wide Receivers, you have to have a stable of top Cornerbacks. Despite the incredible overload talent at Cornerback now, Scot made Cornerback a heavy focus of his UDFA choices. I think he believes the injuries at Cornerback were not a fluke – it will be a vulnerable position going forward due to their relatively small football size and heavier workloads.
Cousins – a passing game obviously requires a great, contract locked down passer.
Colts – who is rapidly becoming the Redskins arch enemy besides the Cowboys, Giants and Eagles? The Colts. Actually, they are more of Scot’s nemesis by admiring him too much. They broke an unspoken rule last year and stole the Redskins 6th round injured cornerback. This year they took Ryan Kelley, the Center that Scot had his heart on (and believe me, they knew it). Why does this matter? It means Scot can’t stash obviously great potential talent on the Practice Squad as the menancing Colts may likely pounce.
