The theory here is to build around the quarterback position.
But this is still a fluid situation. The moves may not be finalized. Phones are still ringing in personnel offices around the league. Deals can still be cut even as the actual draft is in progress on April 28.
Commitments can change, too. Would you bet the deed to your house with 100% certainty on the apparent likelihood that the Eagles will select a QB with the 2nd overall pick of the 2016 NFL Draft? Are you sure?
And now it is possible another team looking to trade a whole bunch of stuff for our #2 pick is in the mix, too…anything is possible and it could happen this week, or even right there in Chicago the night of the draft…
Or say a team with pick #3 doesn’t want either Goff or Wentz but they covet a Tunsil or an Elliot… they swap their #3 for Philly’s #2 and throw in a 2nd rounder, too… I like that kind of party!
You can project the intrigue even further—check out this post from the Australian Stallion:
BEANSTALKER: “I talked about this Triangle BEFORE we traded up. Broncos want Kap. 49ers wanted a 2nd. 49ers wanted a QB to move up using That 2nd for GOFF or use that 2nd for Bradford. The bad blood between us and Chip could mean NO Deal. But no doubt we would want AT LEAST a 2nd….its what we gave up for him. Howie probably wants more out of spite…(and supply/demand). I think we have a better shot at winning AND developing Wentz with Sam staying here and it’s REALLY hard to place a ‘value’ on that ideal situation.”
“If it was a 2nd this year AND Cap room to sign Josh Norman? Hmmm…”
Yeah, it can get convoluted like that in a hurry, and there’s still a good six days remaining to wheel and deal.
Something weird could happen with the contract of Sam Bradford due to the changing nature of “commitment”….
BEANSTALKER: “Was just reading at BGN….about Bradford potentially requesting a trade now because why? Team not committed to him long term? He signed the TWO year deal, didn’t he? I still think he has the chance to light it up this season. BUT, if it means swapping him for a TOP 5 Corner AND a 2nd round pick? WTF are we waiting for? NOW is the time to pull that trigger. Unless we get a 2017 Pick…..we have a week to re-coup a potential 2nd round pick this year and REALLY solidify the secondary? It would be amazing/crazy but crazy/daring…”
“WHAT A GREAT OFF-SEASON SO FAR FOR ENTERTAINMENT!!!!!! ”
If you consider raising the blood pressure of shell-shocked fans to be entertaining, then yes, the Eagles blockbusters have been that—and there may be a few more to come before the Draft.
By the way, Jon Gruden chimed in on the possible logjam at QB for the Eagles if things play out the way we think they will:
“The problem I see right now in Philadelphia is they have too many quarterbacks to be friendly with,” Gruden said Thursday. “How are they going to distribute any reps and get anybody ready when you’ve got Sam Bradford making $18 million, you got Chase Daniel, who’s a backup, making $7 million?
“Now you’re going to have the No. 2 pick in the draft. I don’t know how you’re going to get these guys all reps and get them all ready, but Doug Pederson will have to answer that. That will be a challenge.”
“So you’ve got a new head coach, who is running a new offensive system — you’d better get it in quickly because the games are about to start. So who’s going to get the reps and who’s going to get the leftovers?
“You don’t have time to get three guys reps. You just don’t. If you do, then you’re not running a real sophisticated offense. It’s hard enough to get one guy ready today, let alone two.”
“There could be a trade,” he said, without mentioning Bradford specifically. “I don’t want to start any rumors in Philadelphia, but if they do draft a quarterback, with all they have invested in him, I’m sure they want to get him as many reps as possible.
“That’s going to make somebody unhappy and perhaps expendable.”
