Percy Harvin is multi talented and versatile. His best position is as a slot receiver, where he can get the ball in his hands either with quick passes over the middle, or even with hand offs with direct snaps or end arounds.
On the other hand, Harvin has demonstrated a tough time with staying on the field, and had expressed his reluctance to continue playing in Minnesota. He is entering the final year of his rookie deal and will command a bit more cash fairly soon.
While he is talented, I think there are enough red flags and problems with Harvin that his price was diminished. I heard that the Vikings wanted at least a 2nd rounder for him, and I thought that seemed like too much. The Seahawks then traded for him, spending not only a first round pick this year, but also a couple of later round picks this year and next year.
To say the least, I am impressed. The Vikings now have cash to throw around in free agency and can maybe throw some of it at Mike Wallace. Conversely, with two first round picks, they could move up and make sure they get Cordarelle Patterson, or they could wait and see who is available with their 2 picks. Perhaps they could use those picks on a wideout AND a defensive tackle.
If you couldn’t tell, I am quite impressed by what the Vikings did with this trade. They received more than they should have, and it puts them in great position to improve both this year and in the future.
