The Wednesday Links or All-Olympics, All the Time

I’ve been out of the office and I’m back. I’ll do some linkage now.

Starting with Michael Hiestand of USA Today, he says “LIVE” at the Olympics on NBC does not mean live everywhere in the US.

Newsday’s Neil Best likes Bela Karolyi’s commentary on NBC, but like Bob Raissman of the New York Daily News, feels Bela is a walking, talking conflict of interest as his wife runs the US gymnastics program.

Richard Sandomir of the New York Times says NBC’s ratings for Beijing are much higher than Athens four years ago.

Matthew Futterman of the Wall Street Journal wonders if NBC can keep up its ratings momentum when tape delayed coverage of track & field begins next week in primetime.

The Sports Business Daily/Journal’s Olympics website reports that NBC is averaging a 17.1 rating through Monday night. Tripp Mickle and Jay Weiner of SBD/SBJ write that Visa was ready with a congratulatory ad for Michael Phelps last night.

The Los Angeles Daily News’ Tom Hoffarth writes that a painful interview involving US gymnast Alicia Sacramone that led to a throwaway one liner from NBC Olympics late night host Mary Carillo.

Ken McMillan of the Hudson Valley Times Herald-Record says he enjoyed watching the live gymnastics-swimming twinbill during NBC’s primetime coverage last night. And Ken says New York City is the 47th highest rated market in watching the Olympics.

Ken Schott of the Schenectady Gazette is not a fan of last night’s feature on panda breeding that was seen during the Olympics.

Christopher Byrne of the Eye on Sports Media blog says ESPN Radio’s Erik Kuselias needs to learn his geography. I am not a fan of Kuselias and feel he should not be on the radio, but that’s my opinion.

CNBC’s Darren Rovell says the leakage in Michael Phelps’ goggles last night did not help Speedo.

Tim Lemke of the Washington Times says Kobe Bryant is very popular in Communist China. Tim says NBC’s ratings for the Olympics could not have gotten off to a better start.

Adam Crowson of the Wyoming Tribune-Eagle wishes NBC would not pass off its coverage as “LIVE” in the Mountain time zone.

Bill Goodykoontz of the Arizona Republic is also unhappy over the Olympic tape delay on the West Coast

Tom O’Neil of the Los Angeles Times wonders if the controversy over fakery at the Olympics Opening Ceremonies will hurt NBC’s Emmy chances.

Kate Taylor of the Toronto Globe and Mail says NBC could learn a thing or two from CBC in covering the Olympics. William Houston of the Globe and Mail says CBC is seeing increased traffic to its Olympics website just like NBC is.

That’s it for now.
