Welcome to the inaugural edition of The Week in Sports. With the NHL & NBA playoffs in full effect, MLB back in season and the NFL draft mere days away, it should pan out to be a rewarding week of sports watching. I’ve sorted through the weeks action and compiled a daily list of must-see’s.
Monday, April 19th :
- Detroit Tigers @ LA Angels – 10:05pm – FSD
– Coming off a series loss to the Mariners this weekend, the Tigers begin the first of a four game series with the Angels. Dontrelle Willis is in search of his first decision of the season. Willis has started twice this season, both against the Royals, and has a 4.91 ERA. - Utah Jazz @ Denver Nuggets – 10:30pm – TNT
– These two teams combined to score 239 points in the series opener on Saturday. Carmelo Anthony netted 42 points, a playoff career-high. Former Piston Chauncey Billups had a solid, but quiet 15 points and 8 assists. Mr. Big Shot has been through this playoff thing a time or two. I’d expect him to improve on his opening game numbers.
Tuesday, April 20th:
- Phoenix Coyotes @ Detroit Red Wings – 6:30pm – TSN
– Following a 4-2 loss to Phoenix today, the Wings face what I deem to be a must-win game. Going back to Arizona on Friday, down three games to one would be a huge hole to be in. - Miami Heat @ Boston Celtics – 8:00pm – TNT
– The aging Celtics just may be the only team with homecourt advantage in the first round, to lose. They won game one Saturday, holding the Heat to just 76 points. Tuesday, they’ll have to win without star forward Kevin Garnett, who was suspended for an elbow he landed to the face of the Heat’s Quentin Richardson in Saturday’s game.
Wednesday, April 21st:
- Charlotte Bobcats @ Orlando Magic – 7:00pm – TNT
– The Bobcats held Dwight Howard to just five points and seven boards today, and got an impressive 25 and 17 from Gerald Wallace, yet the Magic still prevailed. Orlando’s Jameer Nelson led his team with 32 points. Charlotte likely won’t make it out of this series, but they could force the Magic to beat them in six or seven games. - Detroit Tigers @ LA Angels – 10:05pm – FSD
– Game three against LA, the Tigers send Jeremy Bonderman back to the mound, after a shaky outing Friday. Bondo let up nine hits and ten runs (eight earned) in just four innings of work against the Mariners.
Thursday, April 22nd:
- 2010 NFL Draft – 7:30pm – ESPN
– I’m happy I only need to endure four more days of Todd McShay arguing with Mel Kiper Jr. over which obscure left tackle will be selected in the third round. This guy below does a great Kiper Jr. impersonation.
Friday, April 23rd:
- Detroit Tigers @ Texas Rangers – 8:05pm – FSD
– Max Scherzer is back on the mound for the Tigers, after earning his first win today. This is the first game in yet another four game road series, before finally heading home to face the Twins. - Detroit Red Wings @ Phoenix Coyotes – 10:00pm – Versus
– Will the Wings be headed back to Phoenix with the series tied, or will the be facing elimination on the road?
Saturday, April 24th:
- NBA Playoffs – All day
– I spent this past Saturday lounging and enjoying playoff basketball. This upcoming weekend should pan out in a similar fashion. The NBA will once again televise four consecutively played playoff games. TNT will be carrying the two early games, with coverage switching to ESPN for the night games.
Sunday, April 25th:
- NASCAR Sprint Cup @ Talladega – 12pm – Fox
– Known for the big wrecks which occur there often, Talladega is one of the fastest tracks in NASCAR. The spring race held there last season, saw Carl Edwards almost finish in the laps of the spectators.
Feel free to comment on which sporting events you’re looking most forward to this week.
