The World And The NFC East Should Listen To Rex Grossman

Washington Redskins quarterback Rex Grossman made a bit of a splash by declaring that the Redskins were capable of winning the division in the NFC East. For the most part, this statement was either dismissed or laughed at (or both) by ESPN and NFL analysts alike, and it isn’t difficult to see why… the Redskins are, after all, coming off of a losing season in 2010 and play in one of the NFL’s more competitive divisions. To win the division they will have to get by the Cowboys, the perennially contending New York Giants, and the Philadelphia Eagles, a team that was very good last season and which made truly huge offseason acquisitions at several positions. However, as you prepare to update your NFL tv package at http://www.directstartv.com and get ready to cheer your team on, here are a few reasons why Grossman’s prediction may not be so outlandish after all.

To begin with, Donovan McNabb is gone. No disrespect to McNabb, who has had a truly great NFL career, but his play was less than inspired in 2010. More important, his absence should allow for more stability at the quarterback position. Rex Grossman has shown flashes of very good play throughout his career, and could be in position to have a strong 2011 season.

The Redskins also improved their running game a few weeks ago when they traded for Arizona Cardinals running back Tim Hightower. Hightower is a very capable runner who has never quite gotten the chance to shine in his young NFL career, with “young” the operative word. However, it looks as if he will be the number one runner for Washington, and with an offense that should be well balanced, he will have ample opportunity to produce. Also, if Hightower can become an everyday threat to opposing defenses, as Redskins coaches no doubt expect, the passing game will be freed up for Grossman to work.

To go through every transaction and adjustment made by Washington this past offseason would take a very long time… however, there are also other teams in the picture. For the most part, neither the Dallas Cowboys nor the New York Giants did a whole lot to improve themselves, meaning that despite the fact that this division is historically very tough, the Redskins may have a bit of an opening. Taking down the relatively scary-looking Eagles will be quite a challenge, but in the end Grossman’s bold prediction might not be as crazy as it seems at first, even if Grossman is not the one to see it through.
