We’ve discussed the lack of veteran depth in the Titans receiving corps and a similar situation exists with the cornerbacks. Cortland Finnegan and Nick Harper are the only experienced corners on the team, with only Cary Williams, who missed most of his rookie year, behind them.
The Titans usually keep six corners on the regular 53-man roster and it looks like Finnegan, Harper and Williams are the only current ones who will still be here next fall. I’d like for at least one of the three additions to be a veteran, replacing Eric King and Chris Carr. It’s still possible, but unlikely, that Carr will return.
In case he doesn’t, the Titans are now looking at Justin Miller, who visited yesterday. He’s a lot better as a return man than as a cornerback. Miller hasn’t started a game since 2006 and was released by the Jets last year before being picked up by the Raiders. Compared to Carr, he’s probably the better kick returner but not as good at corner or as a punt returner.
Of course, there are other free agent corners who are available.
The best two are probably Leigh Bodden and Bryant McFadden. They’re both starter types and will be paid by somebody as such. They’re out of the Titans’ price range and would probably not come here anyway since they’ll have a better opportunity to start elsewhere.
There are two guys I see as more likely candidates.
Ralph Brown will be 31 years old in September and has been with four teams in his nine-year NFL career. Brown had one interception and six passes defended for the Cardinals last year. He sounds like he’d be a good pickup for veteran depth.
Former Brown Daven Holly missed all of the 2008 season with a knee injury. He started 12 games in 2006 and six games in 2007 for Cleveland. Holly is just 26 years old and has some good upside. If healthy, he could be a solid addition.
I could even see Reynaldo Hill coming back on a one-year contract, just to add some depth and play special teams.
What do you think about Miller and the other free agent cornerbacks?
