The Milwaukee Brewers were founded in 1970, one year after the expansion Seattle Pilots were bought and moved to the Cream City. The Brewers became the 12th team in the American League until switching to the National League in 1998. During that time, the Brewers, like every other team, always sent at least one representative to the All-Star Game to represent the American League.
Brewers’ representatives saw an unprecedented dominance while in the American League…by the National League. From 1970-1997, the AL went 10-18.
The Brewers then moved to the National League in 1998…and, since then, the NL has never won the All-Star Game, going 0-10-1…with the tie having taken place in Milwaukee of all places.
That means Brewers’ players are 10-28-1 in All-Star games…worse than any other franchise over the past 39 years.
Coincidence? Sure, the AL started to dominate the NL as early as 1988…but the NL came back and took three in a row from 1994-1996, before losing to the AL in ’97…feeling cocky, the AL probably attributed the 3-1 victory in Jacobs Field to having had the Brewers…and thus convinced the NL that–were they to add the Brewers–that the NL would regain its lost glory…after all, the Brewers had just finished a streak of being on the winning team in 7 of the last 10 years.
Anyway, the All-Star Game is going on right now and I again find myself rooting for the National League…realizing that I was an AL fan during the NL’s dominance, and am now an NL fan during the AL’s dominance…uh oh…maybe I am the one that is cursed?
