The Chicago Cubs have requested permission to speak with Theo Epstein. Don’t be surprised if Theo bolts for Wrigleyville, the Red Sox are a mess and walking away might look pretty appealing right now. Theo may have been responsible for some of that mess but ownership and the players are also to blame. Theo’s relationship with ownership has always been hot and cold and the pushing out of Tito may have deepened the rift. I have always been a fan of Epstein and some of the great moves he has made with Boston but there is no denying some he made some bad moves too; specifically the Lackey deal. On thing is for certain, if the Red Sox are going to move forward they need to get Theo’s situation settled ASAP.
There is another name that has been added to the list of potential managers: Phillies bench coach Pete Mackanin.
