There is something wrong with Joe Mauer

All you complainers about Joe Mauer, all of you that are critical of him, I have to say, I agree with you. Joe Mauer does have a problem. Let’s take a look at what he has done lately:

For the season, he is hitting .324, with a wOBA of .373, generally on par with his career line. His .323 career average is among the highest of catchers all time, and in the top 50 of players anywhere ever. And again, he is outpacing that number this season, even if it is by just a hair.

He makes a lot of money, yes, but there are two counter points. Part of that money, it could be asserted, is to compensate for how grossly underpaid he was before he signed the contract. And there is the marketing component. Keeping a certifiable star on the roster is good for business. Can you imagine the opinion of the team among it’s fans if it’s most popular player was allowed to walk just a couple of seasons after the state paid for a new stadium?

Additionally, the Twins have a payroll of 100 million dollars, and he makes only 20 million of it. There are successful teams operating at 80 million dollars. Joe Mauer is sapping nothing from the rest of the resources. Instead blame Nick Blackburn or other wastes of talent.

I guess what I am trying to say is yes, complainers, Joe Mauer has a problem. It is you.
