It’s understandable that the Pirates are relegated way to the background today, between the 10th anniversary of September 11th and the NFL’s first Sunday, but that’s not going to stop them from playing today and I do think it’s worth remembering, if just for a second, how important a role baseball played in the recovery. All of the things that happened that day were so surreal that they were almost impossible to process. When baseball resumed play in September 17th, it was something normal to hold on to, proof that life really would go on. The Pirates have done their part by naming today First Responder’s Day at PNC and honoring those that protect us with complimentary tickets. I mean, they’re Pirate tickets in September, but still, it’s the gesture that matters here, I think.
Jeff Locke looked like a guy making his big league debut last night. He struggled with his control quite a bit, but his velocity looked pretty good and he had his moments. It looks like he’s going to stick in the rotation for a couple more starts this month, and that’s a good thing. James McDonald goes today against Javier Vazquez, and he’s probably going to have to be pretty much perfect because the Pirates can’t hit at all right now.
First pitch today is at 1:35. It’s OK if you don’t notice: just remember that baseball will always be here, especially when you need it to be.
