July 10, 1973 at Memorial Stadium in Baltimore, the California Angels beat the Baltimore Orioles 10-8. After the Angels would go ahead 8-3 on Lee Stanton’s second homer of the game in the top of the 9th, the Orioles rallied for 5 in the bottom of the inning to tie the game. With one on and one out in the top of the 10th, Stanton hit his 3rd home run of the game to put the Angels ahead for good. Stanton was traded by the Mets to the Angels with Francisco Estrada, Don Rose, and Nolan Ryan for Jim Fregosi. Stanton would hit 3 of his 8 home runs in this game and actually led the Angels in home runs at 14 in 1975.Stanton would be selected by the Seattle Mariners in the 1976 Major League Baseball expansion draft after his time with the Angels.
July 9, 1972 at Anaheim Stadium the California Angels beat the Boston Red Sox 3-0. The Angels would get 8 singles in the game with RBI’s from Ken McMullen and Leo Cardenas and Boston would get one lone base hit as there were no extra base hits in the game. Nolan Ryan pitched a complete game shut out while striking out 16. In the top of the 2nd inning, Ryan would strike out the side on 9 pitches. Ryan would be the only pitcher in major league history to accomplish this in both the American and National Leagues when he did it also with the New York Mets in 1968. 1972 was the first year Ryan was with the Angels and he posted his best ERA with the team at 2.28, but the Angels still finished 5th in the American League West with a 75-80 record as the beginning of the season was cut short by the first ever players strike.
