This Is Next Year: A 2014 Cleveland Indians Draft Recap.

After months of mock drafts and many road-weary scouts, the 2014 Major League Baseball first year player draft came to a close this past weekend. For the Indians, it was a draft in which they had three first round picks along with one supplemental round pick (in which they received from the Baltimore Orioles for losing Ubaldo Jimenez) . Although most of the players who were drafted by the tribe will never make it to Progressive Field (unless they sit in BROHIO) , it is always fun for fans to read the names and scouting reports of the potential future Cleveland superstars.

While the Indians were aggressive by selecting six prep players out of their first ten picks, they were balanced by taking five position players and five pitchers within those ten picks. This was a slight deviation of recent draft results from the organization; 2013 saw only two position players taken with the top ten selections and 2012 only three. It is wrong to speculate that this was the club’s change in strategy, as the draft is a dynamic process which constantly evolves as names are taken off the board continuously.

The 2014 draft class was deep with pitching in the first two rounds and deep with prep positional players the rest of the way. This closely followed the Indians draft as well, which comes as no surprise.

All players have until he July 18th signing deadline to come to terms on a contract with the Indians.

The full list of Tribe draftees is below:

(Note that the Indians selected Peter Dolan, the son of chairman Paul Dolan out of Gilmour Academy, in the 33rd round. He will most likely not sign with the Indians and will attend to Harvard University in the fall.)
