This is Next Year: Heading into the Final Week

The Dominican Summer League wrapped up last week, the Arizona League this week and the rest of the crew will finish out their regular seasons on September 5th. For some, play-offs will follow, but a few teams will have to sit at home and watch this year. This doesn’t necessarily mean the whole team, however, as there were a flurry of minor league moves in the last week, stemming from the end of the AZL and the beginning of September call-ups, so there is still quite a bit happening in the Tribe minor league system.

AZL Indians

By Joseph Coblitz
The Arizona League Indians wrapped up their season on Tuesday with a loss to the Angels in the first round of the play-offs. Oscar Gonzalez was named league MVP and Francisco Perez top pitcher, but Perez was unable to come through when it really mattered. He started the Indians lone play-off game, allowing six runs in 3+ innings and digging the team into such a big hole they were unable to climb out.

The Indians did score six runs in the game including two scored by Gonzalez and three on a bases loaded double from Jose Vincete, the hardest hit ball of the game for the Indians. Dalbert Siri and Felix Tati pitched the final four frames and threw well, striking out six while allowing two unearned runs.

The Indians problems stemmed back further than just this one game though as they turned their five game win streak of last week into a five game losing streak to end the season. Had they won any of their last five games they would have advanced to the second round with a bye thanks to their strong first half, but they were unable to even keep a game close. Including the play-off, they allowed double digit runs in three of their last six and scored a total of 16 runs.

There were a couple positives to end the season with, however, as Cameron Mingo made his first professional start, striking out eight in five innings giving him 15 K’s in 10 IP in his first pro season. Paul Hendrix also continued to shine in his transformation from infielder to reliever and finished the year with a 0.00 ERA with 4 strike outs and 2 walks in 4 IP. Another late season addition, Randy Marte also finished with a 0.00 ERA in 10 innings with 19 strike outs and just eight hits allowed.

Mahoning Valley Scrappers

By Caitlin Boron
The 2016 season for the Scrappers continues to wind down and it seems that this week had the spark they had all August. They finished last month in second place with a 20-10 record, but after losing their last four they’ve sank to fourth in their division.

LHP Ben Krauth and INF Erlin Cerda were both promoted to Lake County. Krauth leaves Mahoning Valley with a 2-0 record, 25 strikeouts and a 2.57 ERA over seven games. Cerda leaves with 5 home runs, 36 RBI and 8 stolen bases in 14 attempts.

A few guys who have also been promoted to The Scrappers from Arizona are RHP Dalbert Siri, RHP Domingo Jimenez, C Simeon Lucas, INF Miguel Eladio, and OF Oscar Gonzalez. In Friday’s game, Eladio, who played short stop, went 2 for 4 with a walk and a run in five AB.

With only three games left for them to place in 2016, they still have a chance to finish in third place behind State College and Williamsport, but are out of the play-offs.

Lake County Captains

By Justin Lada
A loss to Dayton Thursday officially took the Captains out of the Midwest League playoff race.

Trevor Foss turned in another good start in a Tuesday win over Dayton while Sam Haggerty supplied two RBI. Ironically, Triston McKenzie took the season clinching loss. The 19 year old had the arguably worst start of his career: 4 1/3 innings, three runs, seven hits, three walks and six strikeouts. He threw 55 of 88 pitches for strikes.
Andrew Calica had two more hits on Friday in a loss, giving him 11 in seven games as a Captain. Micah Miniard turned in a one run one performance in 5 2/3. Jon Fitzsimmons, who was signed late out of an independent league like Foss, fanned seven in 2 1/3 innings of relief.

Lynchburg Hillcats

By Justin Lada
It’s a good thing the Hillcats wrapped up their playoff start in the first half. They lost two of four in the last week and are tied for the top spot in the second half.
Thomas Pannone fired six shutout innings in a 3-0 win Wednesday over Myrtle Beach, but it was Mitch Brown, who has to now made the full conversion to reliever, got the win. He pitched a scoreless seventh and also threw a scoreless inning in Friday’s loss and struck out the side. In 18 outings as a reliever, Brown owns a 3.42 ERA and 38 strikeouts in 23 2/3 innings. He does have 18 walks in that span too, but it’s a heck of an improvement over his days as a starter.
Leandro Linares, who was promoted from Lake County to help in the playoffs, struck out two in 1 2/3 scoreless innings. In 1 1/3 innings left hander Billy Strode struck out four, so the Hillcats bullpen looks to be in good shape.
The Hillcats recently sent Mark Mathias and Jordan Milbrath to Akron when they received Linares.

Akron RubberDucks

By Gavin Potter

With only three games to go in the regular season, the Akron RubberDucks are in the middle of a heated playoff race. At the moment, the Ducks sit 1.5 games behind Altoona for first place in the Eastern League Western Division. As things stand, Akron would make the playoffs as the second team in their division, but Harrisburg is just one game back from Akron, which should make for an interesting final weekend.
In a year where he has struggled heavily, Mike Papi has been great for the Ducks in perhaps the most crucial part of the season. In Akron’s last seven games, Papi has gone 9 for 28 with two home runs and three walks. Though his AA OPS still sits at only .708, hopefully the former 38th overall pick can build off this mini-hot streak. Rob Kaminsky also turned in his latest stellar outing on Monday, pitching 7.1 innings, while allowing only one run, although only recording three strikeouts and walking two. Kaminsky is now 10-7 with a 3.25 ERA for Akron this season.
Akron’s playoff fate will be decided over the next few days as they take on Bowie Saturday, Sunday, and Monday. Should the Ducks advance to the postseason, the first game would be Sept. 7.

Columbus Clippers

By Joseph Coblitz

The Clip Show lost the last three last week and seven of their last nine, but that didn’t stop them from clinching the International League West. They did so resoundingly and will represent the Indians in the International League play-offs yet again.

After coming off a pretty impressive run of seven straight starts with at least five innings and two or fewer runs allowed, Ryan Merritt pitched poorly in his final start of the season, pitching just 4.1 and allowing six runs on Friday night. This is unfortunate as he was originally expected to be the first choice to replace Josh Tomlin in the Major League rotation. Another left handed starter who could get a call-up shortly is Shawn Morimando and he did pitch well in each of his last two appearances. Against Durham and Indianapolis, he allowed two total runs in 12 innings, striking out 13.
While he’s off any prospect lists and not a September call-up, at least not yet, Jesus Aguilar hasn’t slowed down a bit against AAA pitching. Not only did he hit safely in each of the last three games, he hit an extra base hit in each totally 3 home runs & 3 doubles. He already has a career high with 29 home runs although he is still batting just .249. Aguilar is out of options in 2017 and currently on the 40 man roster, so if the Indians ever want him to test him out in the Majors, it will have to be this month.
