This is why pitching is important

Before I get into the post, I just wanted to note that the next episode of Snipper and Crowbar is tomorrow at 4pm!

The Twins are about to welcome the Philadelphia Phillies for a three game interleague set. It will be fun to see Jim Thome back in town, and it will be fun to see an offense just as bad as the Twins. Wait, what?

That’s right! Well, the Phillies ARE slightly better than the Twins, in terms of runs per game, at 4.21 to 4.15, both in the bottom half of MLB. Their collective OPS are also nearly the same, at .716 for Philadelphia and .711 for Minnesota. The Twins actually have a better on base percentage than the Phillies, while Philadelphia slugs at a higher rate.

What’s my point? It’s the same as it has been all season. The Twins don’t have any pitching, and THAT is the ultimate problem. The Phillies have some pretty good pitchers. Perhaps you have heard. While they aren’t at the top of the NL East standings yet, everyone is wondering when they will turn things around. This is the perspective people have when you actually have starting pitchers, rather than a pervasively sullen feeling, like the one that has gripped the Twin Cities.

I blame Nick Blackburn.
