ESPN’s Joe Schad has been reporting that the penalty the NCAA will hand down to Penn State is a 3 year bowl ban and a fine in the 10s of millions of dollars. Many people, including Schad, have said that this is going to be crippling to Penn State.
Really? I mean…. really?! Penn State will continue in a major conference, in a populous state, with a long history of football patronage. They will still sell out, and if anything else, from what I know of Pennsylvania, it will only steel the supporters in an us vs them battle. If you haven’t realized, most Penn State fans still don’t think the university did anything wrong. The stadium will be packed, and they will still be able to earn a lot of money, sell a lot of merchandise, and continue to be well supported.
Don’t believe me? Consider USC, who is coming off of a 2 year post season ban. At the end of last season, they were ranked #6 in the AP Poll. They weren’t hurt at all. This scandal, the crimes committed are so much more egregious than anything that USC did, and Penn State’s rumored penalty is barely a whisker beyond what the Trojans received.
The outrage that this penalty is too severe is simply unfounded. Penn State will rebound from this, and may be stronger than ever. And that is a travesty.
