Well, the Blazer’s season is over. Many would say, “Hallelujah!” It has been a tough season to watch at times, but the ups and downs come with the sport. This year all Blazer fans experienced a lot more downs then ups.
There are a ton of season recaps all over the internet. Every blog has multiple. They each talk about how injuries have devastated this team for years, how the trade deadline was the beginning of the Blazers “tanking” and re-building, all of the recaps talk about how this team is going to be completely different leading into next season.
All of that is true. But you have heard it all. I am going to give you three changes I would make this off-season if I was in the Blazers front office.
1 – Sign an experienced General Manager and in turn, give him the reigns to sign a Head Coach. Paul Allen needs to let go of the reigns a little and trust an experienced GM (Hammond, Kerr, Ainge). Those guys all have contacts with coaches in the league and would be able to land a more experienced coach than who is in place in Portland now.
2 – Entertain every offer I heard this summer. Having two lottery picks is a huge asset for the Blazers. There has to be a team out there that is interested in these picks and may be willing to deal for them. This team needs a Point and a Center. An experienced Point or Center would be of more benefit then an unproven rookie.
3 – Resign Nicolas Batum and J.J. Hickson… but DO NOT overpay! I am fans of both of these guys, so are the majority of the Blazer fans in this city. But they are not worth overpaying for. There are a bunch of talented 3’s and 4’s in the upcoming draft. This team needs to put together a solid roster, from top to bottom, for the future. Overpaying for two guys in the same offseason would cripple this team for years to come.
Obviously all of this is out of my hands and I have no say in what happens. But the men in charge will be working tirelessly on all of this. That’s a given, with the state of the franchise. Even Mr. Allen gets all excited about the draft. Good things are on the horizon for this team, especially if the front office avoids a few potential mistakes.
