It’s 2016, and the Montreal Canadiens decided to start the calendar year the same way they started the hockey year. Absolute domination. Of course, the one thing the Habs didn’t have was Carey Price in net, but that didn’t matter. Michael Condon started in net for Montreal, but really, the stars were the skaters. Paul Byron sored twice, only his 4th and 55tth goals of the season, while Brandon Gallagher returned from injury to score a goal and an assist.
It surely will go down as an embarrassment for the Bruins, not only because they were so thoroughly trounced, but because it came at home in their proud city in the NHL’s in season showpiece. In the home of the Patriots, one the NFL’s most successful franchises, the Bruins looked completely hapless, and all in a contest that they had over a year to plan for.
SCOREBOARD
New York Islanders 2, Buffalo 1 – Can you believe it was just last year these two teams played?
Pittsburgh 5, Detroit 2 – Evgeni Malkin had three points as the Penguins broke out of their post-holiday funk.
Carolina 4, Washington 2 – The Hurricanes slow down the Capitals. It takes a natural disaster to stop Washington.
Minnesota 3, St Louis 1 – Eric Haula did his first good thing since the playoffs.
Chicago 4, Colorado 3 (OT) – Packing all the hockey they could into 2015.
Dallas 5, Nashville 1 – The Stars seem pretty good.
Los Angeles 4, Calgary 1 – Chicago and LA win tonight, as if to say “don’t forget how we began this decade” as the rest of the world pulls away from them.
Anaheim 1, Edmonton 0 – This game was bad, but probably not for the same reasons many expected at the beginning of the year.
Arizona 4, Winnipeg 2 – Jets beat Thrashers.
