Last night’s Phillies game versus the Twins was just like Tuesday’s night game, very high scoring. In last night’s game, the Phillies jumped out to a six to zero lead in the first inning over the Twins. Also in this inning, John Mayberry Jr. hit a big three run home run to left field to give the Phillies the lead. By the fourth inning, the Twins started to crawl back and were down 7-3. But then, Jim Thome came up and hit a mammoth two run home run that went 466 feet and the Phillies were up 9-3.

Then in the fifth and sixth innings, the Twins would score five runs as Josh Willingham would start this scoring spree as he hit a solo home run. Finally, in the bottom of the ninth, Jonathan Papelbon converted his 17th save of the season but it was not easy as second baseman Michael Martinez made a diving catch to seal the game. Phillies starting pitcher Cole Hamels did not have a great pitching performance tonight as he pitched 6.0 innings, gave up eight hits and six earned runs, and struck out six while giving up two home runs. Hamels is now (9-3) on the season and Chad Qualls had a great night out of the pen as he had three strikeouts. This is what we need to see more out of Qualls with a minor league bullpen. For the Twins, their starting pitcher P.J. Walters left the game in the first inning with right shoulder stiffness.

The Phillies snap their three game losing streak and their record stands at (30-34).  Tonight, the Phillies will be looking to win this three game series from the Twins. On the mound for the Phillies it will be Joe Blanton (5-6, 5.40 ERA) and on the mound for the Twins it will be Scott Diamond (5-1, 1.61 ERA). First pitch is at 8:10 pm.

Quick note: Jim Thome and John Mayberry Jr. went for a combined 4 for 9, two home runs, and eight RBI.
