Thoughts on Kahn

Nobody will get ‘Sota buzzing quite like David Kahn! Any time you can lock down a retread no-name GM, you gotta do it.

But here’s what Kahn brings to the table: business savvy, a close relationship with commissioner David Stern, an abundance of connections from his days with the Pacers and in the development league, and experience in virtually every level of basketball operations.

The other candidates were basketball men. Kahn is a businessman with particular expertise in the field of basketball. I’ll bet this turns out to be a good hire.

Kahn beat out internal candidates Fred Hoiberg and Jim Stack for the job. No offense to either of those two, but Taylor really needed to hire outside the organization. Things have become such a mess that, right or wrong, any internal hiring would be looked upon as an extension of more of the same. The Timberwolves, who have hit bottom in recent years, could ill afford that.

Is it any surprise that the Timberwolves would end up with a guy they apparently didn’t want just a few weeks ago? Of course not. This is the Timberwolves. Clearly, Kahn was the only candidate who was willing to go along with the ridiculous stipulation that the new GM would have no say on whether Kevin McHale keeps his job. I wonder how he’ll feel when he finds out McHale gets to have a say on personnel issues too.
From TalkHoops.net: David Kahn Gets Hired, Ditch Gets Deeper
David Kahn, whose resume includes everything from being a former WW contributor and Oregonian sportswriter to being general manager of the Indiana Pacers and a player in efforts to bring Major League Baseball to Portland, has a new gig.
News reports say Kahn has been hired by the Minnesota Timberwolves to run their basketball operations.
One piece of advice: if Stan Love calls asking to talk to you about his son Kevin, put him in voice mail.
