Three Huskies Named To 2010 Butkus Award Watch List

As the preseason award lists continue to come in, we find three more UConn Huskies football players on a list. This time around, linebackers Scott Lutrus, Lawrence Wilson and Greg Lloyd have been named to the 2010 Butkus Award watch list.

Butkus AwardInstituted in 1985, The Butkus Award® is one of the elite individual honors in college football. This year, The Butkus Foundation, a 501c3 non-profit organization, takes stewardship of the award and comes home to Chicago to fully realize the original purpose of honoring athletic achievement and service to the community while honoring the nation’s best high school, college, and professional linebackers. An independent Butkus Award Selection Committee, headed by Pro Football Weekly’s Hub Arkush and comprised of 51 experts including professional, college and high school scouts, and prominent sports journalists, will conduct the selection process.

Derrell Smith and Doug Hogue from Syracuse are the only other members of the Big East to place someone on the list.

As we already know Lloyd won’t play this season as he’s not fully recovered from the knee injury that ended his 2009 season.

A redshirt senior and two-time captain, Lutrus has played in 34 games in a Huskies uniform. He’s made 282 tackles with 4.5 sacks and five career interceptions. He missed parts of the 2009 season with a stinger injury but is healthy and ready for 2010.

An All-Big East first team selection and another redshirt senior, Wilson led the team in tackles in 2009 with 140 and also garnered five sacks. He’s played 39 games in a UConn uniform and has 326 career tackles to go with six sacks and four interceptions.
