First, I need to say it’s good to be back in Tennessee after a little time off.
Now that Michael Vick has been released from prison the inevitable questions will be asked, “Do you think the Titans will sign Vick?” and “Wouldn’t he be great running the Wildcat for the Titans?”
“No” is the answer to both questions and here are some reasons why.
1) Ever since the tenure of Adam Jones, the Titans have steered clear of any players who have the potential to bring more negative publicity to the team. Signing a convicted felon, one who will bring plenty of criticism from PETA, is not something the Titans are going to do.
2) Tennessee already has three quarterbacks on the roster, plus a fourth, Alex Mortensen, who is this year’s camp fodder QB. Why would the Titans sign another quarterback when they’ll only keep two or three? Kerry Collins and Vince Young will both be here. Patrick Ramsey would have a big head start on any new addition and he’s in football shape, not someone rusty.
3) Two months ago I wrote about the future of the single-wing offense in Tennessee. Jeff Fisher won’t run the single-wing (a.k.a. the “Wildcat”) with the personnel he has now, let alone bring in an additional player for that purpose.
Signing Michael Vick makes no sense for the Titans. But if Roger Goodell reinstates him and if you’re a fan who thinks Vick has paid his debt to society and deserves another chance in the NFL, don’t worry. There are plenty of other teams who will take a chance on him.
